Sláva Sobotovičová (born in Slovakia, lives in Prague, Czech republic) works in performance, video, text and installation. Her work deals with collective memory manifested in popular culture and tradition, mostly through revisiting historical texts, music and visuality. In her writing, performances or recordings, she is especially concerned with the expressive potential of voice.
She has been teaching at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (UMPRUM) in Prague since 2018.
Recently she has also worked on curatorial projects focusing on moving image, text and printed media and showing mostly the work of the youngest generation of artists.
In 2017 she also started collaborating with David Fesl. Their works use formats of exhibition, text, music and performance and focus on institutional critique.
STATEMENT
Within the framework of the residency at MQ Sláva Sobotovičová will write texts and record audios for specific spatial situations. Revisiting historical forms, she will search for their critical potential and features that carry memory and try to link the aural and the visual.
She will further develop her previous method of using her own voice to activate texts and songs. She will explore the roles of language and emotion in an utterance, including their conflicting powers. She will especially look for the moments where a monologue can become a dialogue and where the local transcends beyond its usual settings.
