Andi Schmied

artist in residence September 2017, Hungary /

Statement

During a residency in Vienna I will focus on the production of an object-based performance series and I will work on strengthening my regional network by getting to know and working together with artists and curators around Museum Quartier.

As I have not visited Vienna in my adult life, I would like to re-discover the city by using it as a stage set. Drawing upon its history of artists using performance to alter public space, I want to continue my engagement with the irrational but with focus on the live environment. This would shift my practice from architectural compositions to active interventions and live situations. During the residency, I will treat the city as a ‘live model’ by adding temporary sculptural objects to existing architecture. These physical structures and situations will lead to irrational human actions, which I will record by photography and video. By the end of the residency I would like to gather all the documented interventions and life cycle in a publication.

Biography

Andi Schmied (1986) is an artist based in Budapest, Hungary. With her installations, actions and photographs she meticulously explores architectural anomalies; places that for one reason or another do not follow conventional urban logic. Yet they are part of our cityscapes: these various urban areas that went far from their original function to unfulfilled dead ends of urban planning or utopian architectures.

She studied at The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, and at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. She participated at various residency - programs, for example at Triangle Arts Association, New York, at Residency at S-AIR, Sapporo, Japan and at dortdYart, Dordrecht, NL - and her work has been exhibited in Hungary, UK, Netherlands, China, Czech Republic, Portugal, USA and Japan.
