Nowadays I have three ongoing projects. One of them is the organization of the 40 years old anniversary exhibition of the Steel Sculpture Workshop with one of the former artists, Gyula Várnai, in the Institute of the Contemporary Art in Dunaújváros. The second one is to do a research and write a study about the Contemporary Sculpture Collection in Székesfehérvár, which is connected to the one in Dunaújváros in the way that its basic pieces came from a similar collaboration between an aluminum factory and the artists. It was the antecedent of the workshop of Dunaújváros. The third project is a participation in an international conference called “Cities of a new type. New industrial cities in popular democracies after 1945.” This is organized by the Pepper Arts Project and I am researching the steel workers professional and everyday life, especially how they managed the mandatory cultural and studying programs with work and family.

I applied to the Artists-in-Residence programme, because I’d like to start my PhD at one of the universities in Vienna soon and I’d like to lay the foundation of my doctoral studies. I’d like to write my dissertation about the maecenas system during the Soviet era (1960–1990) in Eastern Europe, mostly between firms or factories and artists. I have already found another biennale in Elblag, Poland, beside the one in Dunaújváros, and I’d like to look for more. I also would like to look into the maecenas system of a Western country during the same period, which was close to the socialist countries, such as Austria and the Western part of Germany. I’d like to study how these different ways of collaboration affected today’s contemporary art, what is the role of these associations in the cultural system which we know in our days. I’d like to compare the contemporary cultural and artistic system between Budapest and Vienna, because they are relatively close to each other, share some common historical grounds and are still very different, I’d like to study the reasons behind these facts.

During the residence I’d like to focus on the research of the related information about Vienna and Austria in the above mentioned topics. I’d like to begin the research in libraries and museums and also take part in the relevant cultural events and look for more aspects to the comparison.


Annamária Nagy (born 1988, Dunaújváros) is an art critic and an art historian. She has got a bachelor and master programme degree at Pázmány Péter Catholic University on the faculty of Art History. In her bachelor and master thesis she was studying the topic how the political system affected the architecture and the fine arts of Dunaújváros.
She is currently working in the King Saint Stephen Museum in Székesfehérvár, where she is working on an ongoing study about the museum’s Contemporary Sculpture Collection and on a new system to digitalize the contemporary graphic arts collection.
